Why is a safety car deployed?
Race control may send out the safety car after a crash, a stranded vehicle, debris on the circuit, heavy rain or another hazard that cannot be handled safely while cars are travelling at racing speed. It is generally used when double yellow flags or a local caution are not enough to protect the drivers and track workers.
The decision depends on the location and seriousness of the problem. A car stopped well away from the racing line may only require a local yellow flag. A damaged barrier, blocked track or recovery vehicle near the circuit is more likely to require a full safety car period.
What happens when the safety car comes out?
Drivers are shown caution signals and must slow down. In many major championships, they cannot overtake another competitor during the neutralised period, except in specific situations allowed by the regulations. The safety car then picks up the leader and controls the speed of the field.
The cars do not simply follow at ordinary road-car speed. They maintain a controlled pace that gives marshals enough protection while keeping the race moving. Drivers also have to manage tyre and brake temperatures, because travelling slowly can make both harder to keep in their operating range.

How does a safety car restart work?
When the circuit is safe, race control announces that the safety car will return to the pit lane. The leader controls the pace within the rules and the race resumes when the relevant restart signal or line is reached. Drivers can then attack and overtake under normal racing conditions.
The restart is often the most tense part of safety car racing. Cars run close together, tyre temperatures may be lower than usual and the leader can try to create a gap at the moment racing resumes. A small loss of momentum can cost several positions, particularly on circuits with long straights.
How does a safety car affect strategy?
A safety car can change the value of a pit stop. Because the field is travelling more slowly, a driver may lose less track position by entering the pits than during green-flag racing. Teams may therefore pit for fresh tyres, repairs or fuel if the rules and fuel requirements make that worthwhile.
That advantage is not automatic. A pit stop can still place a driver behind slower traffic, and a badly timed stop may leave a car at the back if the track goes green immediately afterward. Teams weigh tyre condition, remaining race distance, the likely restart order and the risk of another incident.
The neutralisation also compresses gaps that drivers built over many laps. A competitor who had a large lead may restart only a few seconds ahead of a rival. This is why a safety car can turn a comfortable race into a strategic contest without giving every driver exactly the same benefit.

A physical safety car is different from a virtual safety car. Under a virtual safety car, no vehicle leads the field. Instead, drivers must remain below a controlled speed or delta around the circuit. The cars are usually spread out rather than gathered into one line, so the effect on race positions is less dramatic.
A red flag is more severe. It stops the session or race completely because conditions are considered too dangerous for cars to continue. Depending on the regulations, competitors may stop on the grid or return to the pit lane while officials repair barriers, clear the circuit or wait for weather to improve.
Some championships also use a course car, pace car or full-course yellow procedure. These systems perform a similar safety function, but the terminology, speed controls and restart method differ.
