It is not simply a matter of pressing the brake pedal as hard as possible. A racing driver must adjust pedal pressure as the car slows, because weight transfer, tyre load and available grip change throughout the braking zone.

How threshold braking works

When the driver brakes, weight moves from the rear of the car towards the front. The front tyres gain vertical load and can usually handle more braking force, while the rear tyres become lighter and more vulnerable to locking. If the front tyres lock first, the steering may become ineffective and the car may continue straight. If the rear tyres lock, the rear of the car can become unstable and may begin to rotate. The correct response depends on the situation, but abrupt steering or lifting off the brake suddenly can make the car harder to control. Drivers should learn emergency responses under professional instruction rather than experimenting at speed on public roads.

Threshold braking and trail braking

Threshold braking is mainly associated with maximum straight-line deceleration. Trail braking continues a smaller amount of brake pressure into the corner while the driver turns in. The techniques can be linked: a driver may begin with threshold braking, then smoothly release the pedal as steering input increases.

Trail braking changes the balance of the car and can help rotate it into a corner, but carrying too much brake pressure into the turn can overload the front tyres or make the rear unstable. The transition from maximum braking to cornering should be smooth and matched to the corner’s grip, surface and car setup.

Common threshold braking mistakes

Braking too early is safe but leaves time on the track. Braking too late often forces the driver to release the pedal abruptly, miss the apex or run beyond the corner exit. Other common problems include stabbing at the pedal, holding maximum pressure as speed falls, looking at the braking marker instead of the corner and practising with overheated tyres or brakes.

The fastest racing braking technique is repeatable rather than dramatic. A driver who can brake at the limit while maintaining a consistent release and a clean corner entry will usually gain more than one who occasionally brakes later but compromises the rest of the corner.
