The heel toe technique lets a driver brake and downshift at the same time without upsetting the car. What the heel toe technique actually does
A manual downshift connects the engine to a lower gear ratio. Because the lower gear requires the engine to spin faster at the same road speed, releasing the clutch too quickly can cause a sudden increase in engine braking. The car may pitch forward, the driven wheels can become unsettled, and the driver may lose some braking consistency.
Heel and toe downshifting solves this by matching engine speed to the next gear before the clutch is released. The usual sequence is:
- Brake in a straight line with the ball of the right foot.
- Press the clutch with the left foot.
- Move the gear lever into the lower gear.
- Keep the desired brake pressure and briefly roll or rotate the right foot to blip the throttle.
- Release the clutch smoothly as the engine reaches the required revs.
- Continue braking and turn only after the car is settled.
The name can be misleading. Many cars do not require the literal heel to operate the accelerator. Drivers commonly use the right side of the foot, the edge of the shoe, or a diagonal foot movement. The correct method depends on pedal spacing, pedal height, footwear and driving position.
Why rev matching matters during braking
A rev-matched downshift reduces the shock sent through the clutch, gearbox and drivetrain. It also limits the sudden engine-braking effect that can make the rear of a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car feel nervous during corner entry. The technique does not create extra grip, shorten every stopping distance or make a poor corner approach safe. Its main benefit is a more predictable transition between braking, downshifting and turning.
Heel toe downshifting is most useful when a lower gear is needed before or during a braking zone. It is common in circuit driving, autocross and performance driving, where the driver wants to finish the gear change before turn-in while keeping firm, steady brake pressure. On ordinary roads, a normal rev-matched downshift or a slower gear change is usually sufficient. Practice should take place in a legal, controlled area rather than in traffic.
How to set up the pedals and driving position
Before practising the heel toe pedal technique, sit so that the brake can be pressed firmly without stretching the leg. Your heel should be able to rest or pivot naturally while the ball of the foot controls the brake. The accelerator must be close enough to reach without reducing brake pressure.
Pedal layout varies widely. Some cars have an accelerator that sits lower than the brake, while others have pedals that are closely aligned for performance driving. Aftermarket pedal covers can change grip and spacing, but they must be securely fitted and must not interfere with full pedal travel. Shoes with thin, firm soles usually provide clearer feedback than bulky footwear.
Do not alter your brake pressure simply to reach the throttle. If the foot movement makes the car slow more or less than intended, the setup or technique needs work. A throttle blip should be brief and controlled, not a large burst that causes the engine to flare.
A practical way to learn the movement
Start with the car stationary and the engine off. Sit in the normal driving position and practise moving from brake pressure to a small throttle roll while keeping the leg stable. The aim is to feel a consistent brake pedal force during the ankle movement.
Next, practise at low speed in a safe, open and legal area. Use a higher gear and make gentle downshifts without heavy braking. Listen to the engine and notice how a small throttle blip changes the smoothness of clutch engagement. Increase the braking demand and the size of the rev adjustment gradually, rather than trying to copy a track driver’s aggressive movement immediately.
For a fourth-to-third or third-to-second downshift, the required rev increase depends on road speed, gear ratios, final-drive gearing and engine characteristics. There is no universal throttle percentage. The right blip is the one that brings the engine close to the speed needed by the lower gear. Smooth clutch release remains necessary even when the revs are close.
