1X2 betting is a market used to predict the result of a sporting event, most commonly a football match. The three selections represent the home team win, a draw, and an away team win. Unlike a double chance bet, you choose only one of these three outcomes.

What do 1, X and 2 mean in betting?

The numbers are based on the order in which the teams are listed:

  • 1 means the home team wins.
  • X means the match ends in a draw.
  • 2 means the away team wins.

For example, if Arsenal are listed first against Chelsea, a selection of “1” predicts an Arsenal win. “X” predicts a draw, while “2” predicts a Chelsea win. This is also called the three-way betting market, match result betting, or home-draw-away betting.

The odds show the potential return for each result. Decimal odds of 2.50, for example, return 2.50 units for every unit staked if the selection wins, including the original stake. The exact payout and any deductions depend on the bookmaker’s terms and the applicable market rules.

How 1X2 bets are settled

In most football 1X2 markets, the result is based on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shootouts usually do not count unless the market specifically says otherwise. This distinction matters in cup matches, playoffs, and competitions where a winner must be decided.

Suppose a match is level after normal time but one team wins during extra time. A standard 1X2 bet will generally be settled as X, while a market labelled “to qualify” or “match winner including extra time” may be settled differently. Always check the event’s settlement rules before betting.

Postponed or abandoned matches are commonly void if they are not completed within the bookmaker’s stated time limit. Rules can vary by operator, competition, and market, so a fixture’s listed terms take priority over general expectations.

1X2 betting compared with other match markets

1X2 is different from a two-way moneyline market because it includes the possibility of a draw. In a two-way market, a draw may be excluded or handled through a draw-no-bet condition.

Other common football markets include:

  • Double chance: covers two results, such as home win or draw.
  • Draw no bet: a draw normally returns the stake, while a team win produces a payout.
  • Both teams to score: predicts whether both sides will score at least once.
  • Over/under goals: predicts whether total goals will be above or below a stated line.
  • Correct score: predicts the exact final score and usually carries greater variance.

Because a 1X2 bet has three possible outcomes, the draw is a central part of the market rather than an automatic refund. That can make the odds and risk profile different from a bet that covers only two outcomes.

What to check before placing a 1X2 bet

Check which team is listed as home and which is listed as away, especially for matches played at neutral venues. Confirm whether the market covers normal time only, whether the fixture is a friendly or a competitive match, and how postponed or abandoned games are handled.

It is also useful to compare the available odds without assuming that a shorter price is a safer prediction. Odds reflect probability estimates and the bookmaker’s margin; they do not guarantee an outcome. Team news, injuries, suspensions, schedule congestion, home advantage, and motivation may all affect the likely result, but none removes the uncertainty of a single match.

Responsible use of 1X2 betting

Betting should be treated as paid entertainment, not as a reliable way to make income. Set a budget before placing any wagers, avoid chasing losses, and do not bet with money needed for living costs. If gambling stops feeling recreational or becomes difficult to control, use available deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion tools, or local support services.
